Bergamo: Classic Beauty!
If you happen to be in Lombard, the close-by town of Bergamo will turn out to be a very pleasant surprise for you. I chose it as my base on a business trip to Milan last month, based on the fact that hotel rates are cheaper in that area. To my nice surprise, it turned out that coffee, food etc were cheaper as well.
The modern town of Bergamo is beautiful with carefully planned street layout where downtown offers the classic Italian charm. It’s a calm, quiet town to enjoy walking around, at least at the downtown area, yet not one to feel lonely as lots of people walk by either by foot or in cars and mass transportations.
I have visited the town of Bergamo not once but twice on business in the last year, for four days each time that turned out to be anything but boring both times! I had the chance to explore downtown and discover numerous gorgeous corners. Bergamo is the perfect base to explore the area all around.
If you need to visit Milan quite often, there’s no need of second thoughts. Bergamo offers train transportation to Milan every hour all day long from early morning to midnight. The tickets cost very little and the distance between Bergamo and Milan is around 50 kilometers, an hour train trip.
Reaching Milan you will be conveniently at the central train station that offers connection to all parts of the city, an ideal starting point.
While walking around Bergamo you will find beautiful classical buildings, charming squares, restaurants and coffee shops eager to offer you their delicacies as well as a few shops that locals claim to offer bargain prices, although I didn’t check their word personally, unable to find the extra time for shopping on schedule.
No need to mention that once in Bergamo one should not miss to visit the “old town”, a special place I plan to share my impressions about in the next posted article of mine.
