Mani, Lakonia, Greece: Where the stones speak!


Mani, the area
For years now, the biggest attraction for visitors in Mani is the traditional architecture. The notorious Mani towers, fully harmonized with the natural wild landscape, are a unique architectural phenomenon. They rise proudly to the sky ignoring the years passing by …. These buildings are perfectly aligned with the nature of Mani, its raw materials and colors. The towers have integrated with the land similar to the mountains and the soil of Mani. The Towers of Mani show similarities with the Italian buildings and many believe that their architecture was influenced by them. The towers are made of stony floors, sometimes up to 20 meters height. During their flourishing years, the height of the tower was visual evidence of the importance of the owner family, as the taller the tower the more important the family and its influence in the region. Many times the towers had up to 5 floors. For security reasons , the towers didn’t usually have windows on the ground or first floors. Today approximately 800 towers are saved across Mani . One of the most characteristic Mani settlements is that of Vathia. It is one of the best preserved traditional villages of Mani. Vathia is definitely a place where the visitor may reach the full beauty of the area through its architecture. The view of Mani towers is unique not only for their architectural charm but also for their unique visual way of presenting the locals attitude, people full of pride and honor, feeling grateful for this piece of land they own and rule …. The underground caves of Dyros in Mani are well known worldwide. They consist a unique geological phenomenon and it is one of the most beautiful corners in Laconia. Turquoise green crystal waters, the rocky Mani landscape! The uniqueness of the nature and the colours will surely steal your attention.
Vathia, Mani
The eye of the visitor is captivated as he reaches the Vathia settlement, consisted of about 70 stone towers, lined up one next to another, at the top of the mountain ridge. Vathia begins to be referred in historical texts of the 16th century and became the capital of the area in the 19th century. In 1980, the Greek National Tourism Organization restored several towers into hostels. The visitor is awed by the greatness of the Mani landscape, as it captures the bond among stone, soil and pride through the marvel of simplicity in the architectural lines. The village is about 2 km away from the sea, and is probably the most photographed area of Mani.
Areopolis,Mani

Declared as a landmark, it is one of the traditional & historical villages of Mani. The origin of the area name offers two scenarios. It either means city of Mars, the god of war or by others, the city of winds. Whichever version you choose, get to know the city on foot. The narrow paved streets, the stone houses and the old churches, create a unique image, none similar to be found anywhere else! The scent of the flowers on the balconies and courtyards of the houses will accompany your walks through the narrow alleys. If you wish to swim in the area you will find beautiful beaches at a minimum distance. Nearby you will also find the famous «Caves of Dirou» . Areopolis preserves its traditional color, the locals are friendly and the cuisine is aiming to get you fat!So go ahead and.. Discover it!
